School Room Week: Not Back-to-School Blog Hop

By y@mf5, August 11, 2010

Not Back to School Blog Hop

In 2007, we made full use of our bonus room above our detached garage as our dedicated school room:

Fast forward 3 years to today, and things look very different.  Due to changes (more like a dive) in the housing market and economy, I’m back at work full time, and DH homeschools the kids and works from home.  Our homestead is up for sale, so that means we need to keep things neat and tidy as much as possible in case we get a call for a showing.  We moved the ‘school room’ into our dining room, and instead of dedicated shelves, the kids work out of plastic storage tubs which get tucked away when they’re done with school each day.  A lot of our supplies, maps, books and other material are also in plastic storage bins – stacked up in the old school room (now a storage area).  Whenever we have a need for them, we fish them out of the bins and return them immediately when finished.  The little tables have been disassembled and put away, and the bookshelves are mostly empty.  It’s a big adjustment, but it seems to be working out well.  But then again, it’s only our first week back at school!

I think the biggest challenge will be to keep these bins in some semblance of order and keep our table tops/counter surfaces relatively clutter free!  The boys also have their own laptops now (handed down from Grandma), so they can do their Spanish and writing anywhere in the house.  We also bring school with us wherever we go – to doctor/dentist appointments, sibling’s sports practice, etc. if necessary.  Funny how things change, isn’t it?  We were pretty fixed 3 years ago, now we’re a mobile homeschool.

Not Back to School Blog Hop

Can you believe another school year is set to start?  You can sense it.  The pools aren’t as crowded, the back-to-school sales are in full swing (don’t forget your Tax-Free Shopping weekend), and for us, sports and Scouts are set to begin in a couple of weeks.  This is also the time of year where many homeschooling families, like traditional-schooling families, are getting ready to start a new school year.

Last year our family was blessed to have been a part of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine’s Homeschool Crew.  It was a great opportunity to review different products and try them in our homeschool.  Our time with the Crew was a great experience, but we had to set aside our normal curricula in order to review the products.  This year we are back to a more regular and routine schedule as far as curriculum goes.  Routine is good – especially now that A will officially start Kindergarten and will demand a lot of attention.  There are a few items we reviewed last year that worked very well and will be a part of our school this year.

So without further ado, here’s what we will be using in 2010-2011:

F is for Five

By y@mf5, July 25, 2010

A turned 5 (4 years since ‘gotcha day’ – more on that below) and is looking forward to what year 5 will bring – especially starting Kindergarten.

072410-01

I’m not sure if she understands that she’s not ‘going’ to Kindergarten because we homeschool.  She’s been asking a lot of questions about literally going to Kindergarten and would like to have a special lunchbox (princess pink, of course) to bring to school.  I think it’s the influence of her non-homeschooling friends her age who are also entering Kindergarten this fall.  It doesn’t matter that she’s been following and tagging along with her older brothers in their home school.  She thinks she’s the exception.  The girl’s in for a rude awakening!  But for now, we’ll let her enjoy this special celebration.

It’s also A‘s 4 year ‘Gotcha Day’.  July 10 was the actual day she entered our lives.

Gotcha Day, July 10, 2006.  I imagine her reaction will be like this when she realizes she’s being home-schooled.

But she’ll be quick to adjust, just like the first day we met.

And if she needs coaxing to get her schoolwork done, McD’s french fries will always do the trick.

Happy Birthday, sweet girl!
